The order of the children here is that given in Joseph Foster's "Pedigrees" (1874). In this case, the first child listed is Richard, who does not have a number but is said to be the third son. Then there is 2. John, Thomas, 1. Cecilie, 2. Jane, Gilbert (the eldest), and 4. Anthony. The reason for such an arrangement, which is also seen in other families, appears to be the space needed on the document to provide more details for certain family members, while still keeping them all together. |
