      Misc. Notes
According to "Genealogical Resarch in England," NEHGS "Register, Vol 86, pg. 252, Rev. Leonard Metcalf was rector of the church at Tatterford, Norfolk Co., England and had been born in the village of Apperside, Wensleydale, Yorkshire. The place of his birth comes from his own deposition, recorded in the Diocesan Registry, Norwich (Deposition Book, 1614). At that time he indicated that he was clerk, rector of the parish of Tatterford where "he has been incumbent for forty years, born at Apperside, co. York, [deposed] age 73 years." (In another article of the same name, NEHGS "Register," Vol 80, pg. 312, it is said that Leonard Metcalf became rector at Tatterford in 1574 and that no other Metcalf families lived in the area at that time.)

The article continues that research into records of the time indicate that a large proportion of the population of the area of Apperside had the name Metcalf, Michael and Leonard being very common names. As a result, it has been impossible to determine the parentage of Rev. Leonard, although it is speculated that he may have been the son of a Michael Metcalf who was located at Apperside in the subsidy of
      1542-1544.

The baptism records of Tatterford are incomplete, per "Genealogical Research in England," NEHGS "Register," Vol 80, pg. 312: years 1570, 1579, 1580, 1585, 1590 and 1592 are missing.

The estate of Rev. Metcalf was administered in 1616 "as of West Barsham, Norfolk, of which he was vicar, holding this living as well as the rectory of Tatterford." ("Genealogical Research in England," NEHGS "Register," Vol 80, pg. 313)

Spelling variants include Medcalf and Metcalfe.

    • The birth order of the children isn't certain, as Leonard is not included in the list provided by Joseph Foster ("Pedigrees" 1874). Based upon the dates of birth of the parents and the documentation that John is the oldest child, it would make sense that Leonard is the second child, but this is presently unconfirmed.

    • The birth/baptism dates of the children need further investigation, as there is much conflicting information (see birth note at son Michael's record); and, as of 2022, no digitized parish records are available online. Obviously, what's here doesn't make sense in several instances.
